Refs are a crucial part of roller derby and valued members of the sport.  Bouts can run with no less than 4 refs and generally 7 refs is a much preferred number to have on hand.   So you’re never alone, and there are fantastic ref shadowing opportunities available to those new to the scene.  Refs are welcome to lace up at any point in the season and begin learning the ins and outs of this fantastic sport!   While roller derby itself is still a sport played mostly by women (there ARE men’s teams!), reffing is a great way for guys to get directly involved in the sport and the ‘zebras’ are a welcoming bunch who support each other from league to league.
